Message from the Newly- Ascendant Chair
Alisa Key

Welcome to our new program year!  As the new Chair of the Intellectual Property Committee, I can’t wait to be a part of what this year has in store for the IPC. With our new leadership and our steadfast and fantastic Sponsor, Judy Powell and Kilpatrick Townsend, we are exploring some exciting new opportunities for the IPC which we will share with you soon

As I look in the rearview mirror, I am thrilled with what I see – a successful Annual Meeting hosted in my hometown, Washington, D.C., where the IPC sponsored some really great programs.  With a packed room, we held our business meeting where we recapped the year and our accomplishments and, also said “thank you” to our 2015-2017 chair, John Bates, for a job well done in his leadership of the IPC.  We capped off the business meeting with our Fireside Chat where Shawn Cheadle (General Counsel, Military Space, Lockheed Martin Space Systems Co.), Elisabeth Escobar (VP & Senior Counsel, Global IP, Marriott International, Inc.) and David Goldberg (VP, General Counsel, Enterprise Americas, OpenText) sat down with us to share their insights on how we, as in-house IP attorneys are integral to our businesses as trusted advisors. Shawn also shared his thoughts on Diversity and Inclusion which I expect we’ll see as a recurring theme in the coming year.

To top off the Annual Meeting, we were joined by the leadership of the trademark side of the USPTO, Commissioner Mary Boney Denison and Chief Judge Gerard Rogers, at an intimate roundtable hosted by Kilpatrick Townsend. We had an engaging and interactive conversation with Commissioner Denison and Chief Judge Rogers who updated us on all of the exciting things taking place in the world of trademarks at the USPTO.

Looking ahead, I’m exciting to see the year unfold. Our goal at the IPC is to deliver enriched, engaging, relevant and targeted content to you, to enhance networking opportunities and to listen and look to you for new ideas and thoughts on how the IPC can serve you better. Keep your eyes out for the material we deliver throughout the year, including our periodic Webcasts, Top Ten, Docket article, InfoPak and our monthly Legal Quick Hits and What’s Hot topics as well as new material we look to publish weaving in the four themes of ACC’s Strategic Plan 2.0. Please join us each month for our business meeting and reach out if you would like to become more involved in the IPC.  We have a number of leadership openings we are eager to fill and can guarantee it’s a good way to get to know the IPC better and make valuable connections within the IP bar.

As we close out the calendar year, I want to thank our Sponsor, Kilpatrick Townsend, for its ongoing and exceptional support in helping us to deliver IP content and programs which are of utmost value to our membership and, send a special “thank you” to Judy Powell for never hesitating to step in and lend a hand to the committee without even being asked. We, at the IPC leadership also would like to extend our wishes to you, our members, for a wonderful holiday season. We hope you are as excited about 2018 as we are!

Alisa Key

2017-2019 Chair

ACC IP Committee eGroups - Almost 7,000 Members & Growing!

Among the many resources available to members of the Intellectual Property Law Committee, the best resources are each other, and we leverage our collectively knowledge, skill, and abilities in many ways using the ACC website.  Login to the ACC website now and visit our IP Committee eGroups forum.

TheACC IP Committee eGroup postings are a forum for members to present general and tactical questions, exchange ideas, share best practices, offer template forms, reach out to international membership for information and advice on issues in non-familiar jurisdictions, and many other resources.  The monthly “Hot Topics” are featured, with links to cases, decisions, proposed legislation and regulations, other items of interest to IP practitioners.

Anyone can anonymously post questions and answers. Members may submit eGroup inquiries, and every member may respond.  DISCLAIMER:  eGroup responses are informational only, and are not considered legal advice or counsel.  A client-attorney relationship is not formed from such communications.

We strongly encourage our membership to take advantage of this invaluable resource. Postings may be found here. If you have questions or need assistance, contact Communications Chair Sean Casey.

Aspiring Writers Welcome for “What’s Hot” and Publications

Intellectual Property Law Committee members who are interested in authoring a blog post, an on-line article or an ACC Docket article are more than welcome. You can write something independently or co-author with support of someone at our Sponsor, Kilpatrick Townsend, or another member of the IP Committee. Many states with MCLE requirements give credit for writing articles, please check to see whether your state does.

We also welcome volunteers for the monthly “What’s Hot” presentations on our committee calls.  These focus on proposed legislation and regulations; interesting cases and court decisions; changes in application or review practices; or another other topic that can be presented in about five minutes.  While you may not get MCLE credit, these can be practice for participating on program panels and other activities within the ACC.

If you are interested in any of these opportunities, refer to the above list and please contact anyone in our executive leadership, including our President, Secretary, “What’s Hot”, and Communications Chairs.
