March MCLE - Bringing Discovery In-House: Leveraging Internal Resources to Achieve Value and Minimize Costs

Teaser here

March 28, 2012

7:30 AM - 9:00 AM

Overview

There has much discussion lately about "bringing litigation and discovery in-house," but little explanation of what exactly that means. For example, how much can be done in-house? What should be done inside and what should be left to outside counsel? Can a legal hold be issued immediately and efficiently? What's the process for picking counsel? What about discovery vendors? This session will provide actual options and enable attendees to leave with a plan.

The faculty will outline a detailed process for managing litigation and discovery in-house, specifically designed to minimize risk. The session is designed to be valuable for both smaller legal departments that don’t have much internal resources as well as large law departments that oversee a lot of litigation.
Specifics to be covered include:
*      How to manage a litigation portfolio as well as specific cases
*      The steps that must be taken upon "anticipation of litigation" through trial
*      Managing outside litigation counsel
*      Information governance and how it impacts discovery
*      Determining how much – and what exactly – to bring inside
*      Doing more with less – leveraging resources to accomplish goals cost effectively

April MCLE - Do You Know the Two Most Important New (And Upcoming) California Wage and Hour Laws?

Teaser here

April 19, 2012

7:30 AM - 9:00 AM

Overview

Join Paul, Plevin attorneys as they “demystify” the new wage notice required by the California Wage Theft Prevention Act as of January 1, 2012, and give you a heads-up on the new commission plan requirements that will become effective January 1, 2013.

This seminar will provide practical advice on a number of questions for the new wage notice, including how to complete the form for non-exempt employees receiving commissions, bonuses, shift differentials and other forms of supplemental compensation.  It will also address whether employers should create their own template, whether employers should provide the information as part of the offer letter, and how to give notice of compensation changes.

The session will also help you plan for compliance with the new law that requires commission plans to be in a writing signed by employees as of January 1, 2013.  We will discuss how best to describe commission requirements, obtain employee signatures and comply with the law for any commission plan amendments or modifications.

Diversity Fellowship Program - Interview Volunteers Needed!

Teaser here

We are looking for volunteers to assist with interviewing law students for the SDCBA’s and ACC’s Diversity Fellowship Program.   The law students have been pre-screened by the committee based upon a written application, a writing sample, and a personal statement.  The final vetting consists of the interviews, which will occur at the Bar Center this Saturday March 24, 2012 beginning at 9 a.m.   There will also be a telephonic meeting this Wednesday, March 21st at 6 p.m. to go over interview questions.  Please let Rachel Lucas know if you would be interested in assisting with the program by interviewing these students, and assisting with ACC and the Bar’s initiative and institutional program of advancing diverse attorneys into law firms and legal departments. She can be reached at 619-321-4118 or at rlucas@sdcba.org.
